A full identity for a sparkling aperitif brand, built to hold its nerve on a crowded shelf and travel from label to bar menu without translation.
Halcyon came to Vellum Studio as three founders, a recipe and no name. The brief was direct: build a brand confident enough to stand beside gin and vermouth on a top shelf, but honest about being a first release from a small distillery in Bristol. We began in tasting sessions, not mood boards.
The name came from the pause before dusk, the hour the founders drink outdoors regardless of weather. From there the system built itself around restraint: a single vermillion pressed against a paper-white label, a wordmark carved from a slow, ink-trapped serif, and a ribbon motif borrowed from the founders’ original hand-drawn sketch.
The bottle had to work from two metres away on a crowded shelf and two centimetres away in someone’s hand.
Packaging carried the weight. We ran four rounds of glass sampling to find a bottle that photographed well under bar lighting and still felt honest on a kitchen counter, then built a label system that could flex across the core aperitif and two seasonal releases without losing the family resemblance.
Halcyon launched into forty independent bottle shops in its first season and was picked up by three regional wholesalers within the year. The founders still send us a bottle from every new batch, partly for approval, mostly, we suspect, as an excuse to keep the studio honest about how it reads on shelf.
